Background in "dyslexia in adults" expertise

Introduction

The EU supported Grundtvig workshop (March 2014) ALIPPE and the ALIPPE Erasmus+ KA1 workshop (March 2016) for European Prison Educators were very much appreciated (the best training, I ever have participated in!"). Some of the participants even made the effort themselves to make a translation of the student book in their own language: Next to the Dutch and the English version, there is a Swedish, an Italian, a German and a Greek version.

Why prison education? The acronyme ALIPPE stands for "Awareness Literacy Improvement Possibilities for Post-secondary Education". Low literacy is a hot issue; the ALIPPE student course with its structured teacher and student book, would also help Post-secondary - and Adult Education institutes and teachers to empower hesitant (young) adult learners and will help to recognize the dyslexic way of learning.

In 2009 much came together: Jan van Nuland (dyslexic, owner Valk&Uil, trainer/ coach for adult dyslexics and author of a book for adult dyslexics) had offered to participate in a Finnish initiative for an EU Grundtvig Learning Program "Breaking-Barriers" . When looking for a formal adult education partner in the project, he met Annet Bakker (Prison educator; then also: central coordinator PE in Holland, now also: the chair of the EPEA).

The Breaking Barriers Dutch regional seminar (April 2012) focused on "dyslexia in detention"; where the project was aiming at promoting the different way of thinking of adult dyslexics in general. This seminar gave rise to the Dutch Prison Authority (DJI) to start a National Pilot on dyslexia support in three prisons. In close cooperation with a group of prison teachers and librarians, the training material of Valk&Uil was made fit for their needs and was run by them. The six lessons course became supported with examples, exercises and a student book in an easy to understand language.

Nationally, the project was awarded with the International Price 2012 of the Dutch Learn for Life organisation. Later, in 2013, the Grundtvig National Authority asked Valk&Uil to disseminate their expertise in a Grundtvig workshop for prison educators: the teacher and student book was further upgraded and translated in English. Also for 2018 an ALIPPE prison teachers workshop has been programmed.

The link with prison education will further be strengthened by participating in EPEA projects. E.g. visiting the EPEA conference in Vienna (Nov. 2017) and the EPEA conference in Antwerp (Oct. 2015).

Cooperation with other Adult Education organisations and teachers, both Dutch as International has been started. Every new partner will be welcome.
